- There are a few things which makes northern Thailand or the north Thailand real attractive.

One of the first is Chiang Mai, the undisputed capital north of Thailand. To explore Chiang Mai and the area around means travel north and great views are waiting. There are stunning national parks and other attractions, among them is the northern Thai food. Hiking into the lush tropical jungle and elephant trekking are highlights, the so called hill tribes of northern and western Thailand are very interesting and colorful. Northern Thailand travel could also be an extension to southern Thailand vacation. Its very easy to take a airplane at Phuket, hop to Bangkok Airport change the airplane and take off to Chiang Mai. Bangkok Air also offer a direct connection from Phuket to Chiang Mai. A excellent Thailand hotel at Chiang Mai is the Montri Hotel, its a good 4 star hotel at the edge of the old town and even parts of the old city wall can be seen from the hotel, dozens of other Chiang Mai Hotels are around.

Within about 20 minutes walking distance all interesting buildings and monuments of the Chiang Mai old town can be reached. To visit the famous Chiang Mai night bazaar it needs a 10 minutes tuk tuk ride. Around the night bazaar which is in a rather newer area of the city are several tall north Thailand hotels. Chiang Mai in north Thailand is very compact and much better organized than Bangkok or Hat Yai (Hat Yai is the third largest city in Thailand and Chiang Mai is the second largest. All cities and places in northern Thailand can be reached out of Bangkok by bus from the northern bus terminal at Mo Chit, the BTS Bangkok Skytrain station is there. Buses for Bangkok Chiang Mai and other destinations usually leave from there every hour. There are plenty of Chiang Mai flights from several airlines out of Bangkok Airport. From time to time they even have a flight from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai to Mandalay in Myanmar or Burma.

Northern Thailand is also called 'Isaan" which means northern of Thailand plus some parts of the down the border with Laos and Myanmar Thailand. There are also plenty of beautiful rivers with resorts, hotels and bungalows along the water. Every bigger town in north Thailand has good Thailand hotels and restaurants to feel comfortable on you Thailand vacation. A Thailand beach can also be found in that area along the Mekong river

usually no one travels to north Thailand  for a beach. Most northern hotels have some king of Thai massage facility and some even a original spa. A spa in north Thailand is usually available in the luxury resorts such as the Four Seasons Resort at Chiang Mai.

The culture, fun and easy living in the north of Thailand is famous, the only problem are the politicians of the various political parties in Thailand who try to play the northern Thais against the southern Thai to gain personal benefits. At the golden triangle on the Thai side people have more or less abandoned all opium growing business. All this shifted into Myanmar or Burma and comes back as pills and other forms of drugs.

North Thailand tourism is rather little developed but you can find excellent northern Thailand tours and travel into the blue hills of the north, the weather is also quite ok and it almost never gets real cold, its always above 20 Celsius.

Sukhothai and Phitsanulok are at the southern edge of north Thailand quite a distance south of Chiang Mai but its real Buddha county since ages. Once you visit the historical park at Sukhothai you will get a much better understanding of Thailand.
