Kanchanaburi province is sugarcane, mountain forest and reservoir county,

a excellent blend for non beach comber tourists. The most famous in the whole province is by far the - Bridge over
the River Kwai
- which draws every year hundreds of busloads of tourist from all over the world into Kanchanaburi town.

But the real “show” goes on in the rugged mountains from Kanchanaburi town towards the three or 3 pagoda pass at the border with Myanmar or Burma. It’s a wonderful blend of jungle, reservoirs, rivers, caves, waterfalls, trekking, hiking, rafting, boat river cruise, just name it.

Several companies in Kanchanaburi offer boat and raft trips one also can do it by renting a long tail boat, check the boat first because most of the long tail boat’s have no muffler on the engine and this could bring awful noise. The Thai guys handling this boats are almost deaf already.

Trekking tours
are offered into the hills by several companies, it could include elephant rides and bamboo rafting trips, if you take the cheapest it will bring you trouble.

All this is integrated into some of

northern Thailand’s most spectacular National Parks and Wildlife Reserves.

Kanchanaburi somehow is the legacy of the continuous struggle -over hundreds of years- between the Thai and the Burmese -now Myanmar’s-.

It was northern northern Thailand’s King Rama 1 who established Kanchanaburi as a bulwark against the continues raids into the Kingdom by Burmese armies who even conquered Ayutthaya -the former capital- in 1767 and totally destroyed the city.

Kanchanaburi is a three-hour drive from Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. Train and buses service is available out of Bangkok. Many visitors come to Kanchanaburi to have a look for the famous -Bridge over the River Kwai-.

Bicycle and small cabs, called "tuk-tuk," plus "Motocyctaxi" can be hired in Kanchanaburi. A day trip from Bangkok could be done but wont make much sense since there are several hotels and guesthouses.
